Report: Mbappé ‘Not Very Happy’ About PSG Leaking Contract Strategy

Earlier this year, journalist Sid Lowe was on ESPN FC to discuss the possibility of Real Madrid signing Kylian Mbappé and how such a mega-deal might actually play out. He also mentioned the very real chance that Paris Saint-Germain may not sell their superstar for any price regardless of his contract situation.

“Of course [Real Madrid] also believe that it’s possible that there is a risk that it’s not just about the price it’s about the willingness to sell at any price of PSG. If that happens, of course, they will then have to wait until the point of which the regulations mean that a price is set on their behalf.”

Those comments echo reporting from Sport that claims PSG “have no intention of selling their star player regardless of how reluctant he is to accept a new contract offer.”

That bold stance and the perceived leaks to the press have reportedly upset Mbappé and his family as reported by AS.

“I think Mbappé’s family are not very happy with the information that is leaking from within PSG that refers to the fact that they are willing to leave him without playing for a season if he does not renew his contract,” a senior official at a top representation agency with direct contact with Mbappé said. “So, they are only going to be able to hasten their departure.”

The report from the Spanish publication paints a negative view of the situation as you would expect. The writer actually said, “Mbappé’s relationship with PSG today hangs by a thread.” Sure…OK.

AS have also reported that Leonardo, PSG’s sporting director, would rather let Mbappé leave in 2022 for free than accept an offer from Real Madrid in 2021, and maybe that was true prior to the coronavirus but I think a lot has changed since then.

First of all, just a couple of days ago, ESPN reported that PSG was lining up a lucrative contract extension for the Frenchman with club sources remaining confident in getting the deal done.

Secondly, with the coronavirus impacting the finances of clubs around Europe, it’s hard to imagine any club, including Real Madrid, affording PSG’s asking price for Mbappé this summer or next. The same goes for FC Barcelona and Neymar Jr. The money just isn’t there for clubs to spend €150 million or €200 million on one player.

We know that Mbappé cares about winning and right now at PSG, he’s doing that. The club still has an opportunity to win the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1, and two domestic trophies. If he pulls off the quadruple and plays a major role for PSG, Mbappé will be a strong candidate for the Ballon d’Or. Why would he leave his hometown club for Real Madrid again?

Below is a video that Mbappé posted on Instagram yesterday showing him having fun with his family. Also, check out some of the images of Mbappé after PSG defeated Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League. He sure looks happy in Paris to me.
