Maxwell Optimistic About Neymar Signing a Contract Extension With PSG

Earlier this week, ESPN reported that Neymar Jr. is optimistic about a potential contract extension at Paris Saint-Germain.

With the Brazilian potentially extending his stay in the French capital, there’s obviously plenty of chatter regarding the future of Neymar and what he should do. Even former PSG left-back Maxwell chimed in on the topic hoping his compatriot would remain with the club that signed him for €222 million from FC Barcelona in 2017.

In an interview with Le Parisien, Maxwell discussed the benefits of Neymar sticking with the PSG project.

“The project has grown, the club has evolved, it can give him balance and the basis for being the best player in the world.”

With no other club being able to realistically afford the transfer fee that the French giants would likely ask for, it wouldn’t be the worst thing for Neymar to stay in Paris. As Maxwell mentioned, the profile of the club continues to grow, and PSG is always dominating their domestic competition and spending the amount of money necessary to compete with Europe’s best in the UEFA Champions League.

Furthermore, if Neymar can stay healthy, there’s no question that his legacy can go further in Paris than anywhere else. With Barcelona or Real Madrid, he’d be on a long list of players to win major trophies with those teams. However, in Paris, Neymar can be the first to deliver a Champions League and the possibility to set new records if he decides to extend his contract with PSG.

With Marquinhos and Marco Verratti already extended until 2024, Maxwell hopes that Neymar can follow in their footsteps to keep the core of this team together for the foreseeable future.
