Mbappe Issues a Verdict on Marquinhos’ Second Season as PSG Captain

Plenty of high expectations were placed on Marquinhos when now-former Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel opted to pick him to be the successor to Thiago Silva as team captain. From Kylian Mbappe’s perspective, Marquinhos has met those expectations.

Following PSG’s Ligue 1 home fixture against RC Lens, Mbappe was asked (via Le10Sport) about his recent comments regarding “new elements” that are being considered for his club future. When also asked on whether wearing the captain’s armband would interest him, the French international instead noted that Marquinhos deserves to still don it.

“These are things that come naturally,” Mbappe said. “We had Thiago Silva who was a great captain, Marquinhos took over naturally. He prepared himself to become captain. Now he is. He is a very good captain. Even for him it’s a bit disrespectful, it’s making him uncomfortable.

“He is the captain of PSG. He has a long contract here and he will stay for many years and we have to support him.”

There was much debate as to who would be the successor to Silva as PSG captain. From Marco Verratti to Mbappe, Tuchel had plenty of options regarding this matter but went with Marquinhos in the end, which later garnered approval from Silva himself.

On the pitch, Marquinhos has been PSG’s go-to defender this season, which includes 28 appearances in Ligue 1 play.
