Silva is Confident Marquinhos Will Succeed as PSG’s New Team Captain

Thiago Silva’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain not only created a void in the team’s backline but also with the team’s captain armband. Silva was PSG’s captain for most of his time with the club but as he left for Chelsea FC, manager Thomas Tuchel had to pick a new successor. Tuchel’s choice was not a difficult one as he picked Marquinhos to be the new team captain.

Silva has played hundreds of games alongside Marquinhos for both PSG and the Brazilian national team, so he knows very well how can be a leader on the pitch. In an extended part of his interview with France Football (via Le10Sport), Silva talked about why Marquinhos will do well in his new leadership role for the club.

“He deserves to wear the armband,” Silva said. “He never forced it, he was patient. He’s a leader in the locker room and on the pitch where he talks and motivates a lot. I hope he gets the success he deserves.”

For PSG to go from Silva to Marquinhos with the team captain role was like a passing of the torch for the club. Now it is up to Marquinhos to play and perform up to the expectations that are called out of players who wear the captain armband.
