Pochettino Explains Why Navas Earned the Start Over Donnarumma in the Ligue 1 Fixture vs. Bordeaux

Days removed from its UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg loss against Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain returned to Ligue 1 play in the home clash against Bordeaux. PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas earned a start in the fixture over Gianluigi Donnarumma, as the Costa Rican logged five saves.

In speaking after the match (via L’Equipe), PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino debunked the notion that Donnarumma did not start in this fixture due to his goalkeeping miscue in the second half of the recent loss to Real Madrid.

“It is not a mistake of the goalkeeper but a referee error,” Pochettino said. “Donnarumma is fine, we chose Keylor today. Gigio and Keylor are both disappointed. It is the results that decide the choice and not a mistake.”

Overall, Navas has featured in 17 league fixtures so far in the campaign, where he has recorded six clean sheets. On the other hand, Donnarumma has appeared in 11 league matches in the season to go along with his four clean sheets recorded.

For now, it will be noteworthy to see on just which goalkeeper Pochettino will opt to start in the upcoming league fixture against AS Monaco.
