As Paris Saint-Germain cruises through the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League, many would point to Les Parisiens as a complete team. However, one position remains on shaky ground even as PSG marches toward a second consecutive Champions League title.
Last summer, PSG signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille to replace the outgoing Gianluigi Donnarumma, who eventually landed at Manchester City. He was seen as the next great French goalkeeper, and he would be the PSG number 1 for years to come. It was a gamble for PSG, much like those who use Bonusfinder casino bonuses, but at the time, it was seen as the next best option if keeping Donnarumma in the French capital wasn’t possible.
Chevalier had an inconsistent start to the season. He made mistakes and never played with the kind of confidence Donnarumma displayed. In six Champions League matches that Chevalier started, he failed to keep a clean sheet. The Frenchman went down with an ankle injury in October, and in stepped his backup, Matvey Safonov.
Safonov led PSG to the FIFA Intercontinental Cup title with a stellar performance. He was called upon when the game went to penalties and made four saves. A hand injury kept Safonov out for a few matches in January 2026, but even two clean sheets in Ligue 1 weren’t enough for Luis Enrique to keep Chevalier in goal for the rest of the season. As soon as Safonov was healthy, he went right back into the starting lineup.
While Safonov has been better than Chevalier this season, he isn’t the kind of world-class goalkeeper that a squad like PSG needs. He’s made mistakes, like recently against Toulouse FC, where his error led to a goal. For that reason, I think PSG needs to reevaluate the goalkeeper position this summer and potentially send Chevalier on loan or entertain transfer offers.
Safonov has certainly done enough this season that if he isn’t OK with being the backup at PSG, another big club would certainly make a move to sign him. In terms of the starting position, PSG could look to sign Diogo Costa from FC Porto, Mile Svilar from AS Roma, Anatoliy Trubin from Benfica, or Robin Risser from RC Lens. All are relatively young, like Chevalier, so there’s a risk if PSG signs one of these goalkeepers, which is why 28-year-old Gregor Kobel at Borussia Dortmund could be another option.
Another goalkeeper option may emerge at the FIFA World Cup this summer. If PSG can solidify the goalkeeper position ahead of next season, they may truly be unstoppable.
