Di Maria Claims He Knew He Would Assist Cavani’s 200th Goal

Last Saturday, Paris Saint-Germain manager started Edinson Cavani over Mauro Icardi with what many speculated was a move to get El Matador his 200th goal for the club in front of the home supporters.

In the 25th minute, Cavani rewarded his coach by making a run towards goal and scoring one of his trademark headers to bring PSG level at 1-1 with Bordeaux. It was the type of goal we’ve seen him score many times before.

Lost in the celebration was how good of a ball Angel Di Maria played to Cavani. The Argentina international whipped in a ball with enough pace that all Cavani had to do was get the slightest of touches in the rain.

In an interview with PSG TV, Di Maria discussed the club’s upcoming matches again Dijon FCO this Saturday and the semi-final of the Coupe de France against Olympique Lyonnais, but first, he talked about his special delivery for Cavani’s milestone achievement.

“I think it was something that sums up my play quite well; to have the ball on the wing, to cut inside onto my left foot. Edi is a very experienced striker with a lot of qualities and he’s very good in the air.”

“He looks for the ball at the near post and knows how to make diagonal runs. When I controlled the ball, I saw his run and I gave him the ball in the right place with the right timing. A few days earlier I told him it would be me that provided the assist for his 200th goal and that’s what happened and I’m very happy for him.”

Hopefully, Di Maria starts getting visions of recording assists on March 11 when Borussia Dortmund comes to the Parc des Princes with a place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on the line.
