Marquinhos 2024: Paris Saint-Germain Star Extends Contract

It was reported a few days ago but today, the official announcement was made. Marquinhos has extended his contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 2024.

The two-year extension comes on the heels of Marco Verratti’s deal that will also keep the Italy international in Paris until 2024. In Marquinhos and Verratti, PSG has solidified the spine of their team for years to come.

In an interview with PSG TV, Marquinhos spoke about his decision to extend his stay in Paris.

“I’m very happy and very proud to have signed this new contract. It’s a responsibility to play here at Paris Saint-Germain and I feel really proud to wear this shirt. It’s my seventh season here in Paris, I know the club very well and I also know its ambitions very well. We have experienced some really great things, some things that have made me grow and made the club grow too. It was a good time for me to extend my contract with Paris Saint-Germain.”

Marquinhos was signed by PSG in 2013 from AS Roma and has blossomed into one of the most versatile defensive-minded players in the world.

Already a vice-captain, it’s believed that Marquinhos will take over as PSG’s captain once Thiago Silva departs the club, which could be at the end of the season when his contract expires.

The news of Marquinhos extending his contract is another nail in the coffin of the idea that PSG is a selling club and that no top player wants to remain in Ligue 1. Make no mistake about it, Marquinhos (and Verratti), would walk into the starting lineup of every team in Europe. Having those two players show their commitment to the Paris project bodes well for the club in their negotiations with Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr.

Marquinhos plays a vital role in manager Thomas Tuchel’s system and that likely contributed to his decision to stay, but it’s also his love of Paris that played a major role.

“This club and this city have become very important in my life. I’m more than ever Parisian, I feel at home. I show every waking moment that I’m happy here, and that it’s a great privilege to be able to participate in this club’s history.”

We’re glad to have you too, Marquinhos.
