Last week, Marco Verratti confirmed his commitment to Paris Saint-Germain by signing a contract extension that will keep him in the French capital until 2024.
The Italy international joined PSG from Pescara in the summer of 2012 and has blossomed into one of the best midfielders in the game. He has a rare combination of tenacity and technical ability and plays much bigger than his 5’4″ frame.
His contributions don’t always show up in the stat sheet but Verratti’s contributions to PSG’s success are immeasurable. He is one of the first names on the team sheet when healthy and manager Thomas Tuchel considers him a possibility to one day be captain of PSG.
Verratti is currently experiencing one of his best seasons ever with new signing Idrissa Gueye playing next to him and Marquinhos continuing to grow as a world-class defensive midfielder. With those two players bossing the midfield, Verratti has been allowed to venture forward more and take on a creative role knowing he has two defensive-minded players covering the space he leaves behind.
