It’s been more than a week since Paris Saint-Germain’s 5-0 win over Inter Milan to claim the first UEFA Champions League title in club history. While fans are still basking in the accomplishment, the club is busy figuring out how to improve the squad ahead of the 2025-26 season.
The first significant change to the squad could come to the goalkeeper position. Gianluigi Donnarumma had an unbelievable Champions League tournament, but as he enters the last year of his contract, the time to decide his future is now. If the Italy international decides he has accomplished everything at PSG and wants a new challenge or to find Australian places to play, Les Parisiens will be forced to entertain offers for their starting goalkeeper. That could lead to Matvei Safonov stepping into the role, or PSG could look to sign Lucas Chevalier from Lille, but the transfer fee will be steep.
Another potential change to the squad could be a new center-back. Marquinhos has given everything to PSG, but he’s on the downslope of his career now, and for PSG to compete for future Champions League titles, PSG will have to look for a successor. Marquinhos will likely stay on the team for the duration of his current contract, but PSG will look to sign Illia Zabarnyi from AFC Bournemouth or Ibrahima Konaté at Liverpool FC, who is entering the last year of his contract and is from Paris.
The midfield is pretty much set, but there could be a change regarding Fabian Ruiz. His value will never be higher than it is now, and at 29 years old, PSG may consider offers for Ruiz to provide more playing time for Warren Zaïre-Emery. His development is critical to PSG’s success, and after a season where he took a step back, now is the time for the Frenchman to secure a place in the starting lineup.
PSG boasts one of the elite attacks in world football. Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia led PSG to the Champions League title. Bradley Barcola saw plenty of playing time and, against certain opponents, is a better option over Doué. But Gonçalo Ramos is more of a traditional striker and feels out of place in Luis Enrique’s system. Ramos is an efficient attacker, but just not what PSG needs at this time. In order to spend big on a goalkeeper and defender, PSG may need to part ways with the Portugal international.
