Expert Opinion: Assessing the Viability of PSG’s Bid for AC Milan’s €175M Star

Over the weekend, reports suggested that Paris Saint-Germain wants to sign AC Milan’s Rafael Leão during the summer transfer window. If he leaves, the capital club considers him a possible replacement for Kylian Mbappé.

The reports also mentioned that the player’s close circle informed him about PSG’s interest, leading him to contemplate his future despite extending his contract with AC Milan until 2028.

CBS Sports reporter Jonathan Johnson commented on the rumors connecting Leão to the French capital. While a push for the Portugal international would be expensive since he has a €175 million release clause, Johnson believes it’s possible.

“I understand Leao has been of interest to PSG in the past, and there’s the connection there with Luis Campos, who has worked with him before, having signed him at Lille,” Johnson told CaughtOffside. “Still, his form has suffered a little recently, and that’s something that has to be factored in, though I think the fact that Campos knows him well could count in his favor.

“We’ll have to see if it’s a deal PSG can make work, and it’s definitely one to keep an eye on, but I also wouldn’t be surprised this summer if PSG reassesses their attacking options after a first full season with a lot of new signings playing together.”

Last June, Leão extended his contract with the Serie A side as he committed to the long-term. Nonetheless, it’s surprising that the Portugal forward would contemplate leaving less than a year after committing to AC Milan until 2028.

It will be interesting to see how this entire saga transpires and whether there is any move from PSG’s perspective.
