After Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris announced that he was retiring from the France national team on Monday, speculation over who will lead Les Bleus began to surface.
A report from L’Equipe revealed that Manchester United’s Raphael Varane is the likely player to take over the captain’s armband. This would come as a surprise since many expect Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe to lead France.
With speculation ongoing, PSG boss Christophe Galtier was asked whether Mbappe should be leading France. The new captain would begin wearing the armband in March when the French squad starts their qualifying matches for UEFA Euro 2024.
“I’m not Didier Deschamps; I don’t think he’s going to make the wrong choice,” Galtier said. “Kylian is 24 years old, with already a lot of matches on the clock, incredible performances. Being a captain means a lot of responsibility. Even without the armband, Kylian is a team and dressing room leader.”
