Pochettino Makes a Case on Why Ligue 1 Is a ‘Difficult League’

Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino sees that competition in Ligue 1 this season has been quite a challenge.

Pochettino recently spoke to PSG TV ahead of the side’s upcoming Ligue 1 encounter with Brest, where he explained on why he sees that France’s top flight is one league that simply continues to grow.

“It’s a difficult league,” Pochettino said. “I think that there’s merit in what we’ve done so far. It isn’t an easy league, and it’s improving year upon year. It’s growing, and it’s become very competitive. Naturally, given how Paris have done in recent years, we’re always the team to beat, and I think that it’s normal for the teams playing against us to have added motivation.

“I think that that extra effort sometimes makes matches difficult against teams that defend a lot and close down the spaces. It isn’t easy, but it certainly means that we deserve to be where we are, at the top of the table.”

The reputation in Ligue 1 over the past years certainly has taken a hit considering the dominance of PSG. Still, Pochettino well sees that the level in Ligue 1 has been a quality challenge to PSG so far in the ongoing campaign.

Overall, PSG has been in roller-coaster form as of late in league play, especially as it has recorded a mere one win in its last five such matches. PSG is just coming off of the 1-1 draw result against Olympique Lyonnais in league play.

As noted, PSG will host Brest up next for a key matchup in Ligue 1.
