The Ballon d’Or will be handed out later this month, and one of the contenders for the award is Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi. The 34-year-old had a stellar year resulting in him winning the Copa América this past summer.
The report states that Messi has already been informed that he will be the winner and even granted the usual interview to France Football. However, this is all speculation, nothing concrete yet; of course, the PSG star is a favorite to win but does have competition.
FC Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is the other favorite to win the award and the only serious challenger to take the Ballon d’Or from Messi. The number of goals scored by the 33-year-old put him as the runner-up challenger.
There’s also Chelsea midfielder Jorginho a long shot, but his run in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Euros could remain in some voters’ minds.
Nonetheless, if the report is accurate, it won’t matter who the challenger is as Messi will walk away with another Ballon d’Or.
