The 2021 Ballon d’Or award will be awarded this Monday by France Football. There are multiple top contenders for the prestigious world football honor this year, from Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi to Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.
As expected, PSG playmaker Angel Di Maria backs his longtime Argentine teammate Messi to go on and win the seventh Ballon d’Or award of his career, which he explained further to RMC Sport‘s “Rothen s’enflamme” program.
“Yes, I think so,” Di Maria said. “He has had an important year in his career. To win the Copa America with his country after so many things that happened to him in the national team, he finally won it. Just for that he deserves it.”
Di Maria shined alongside Messi with the Argentina national team at the 2021 Copa America tournament. While Messi logged nine total goal contributions, Di Maria did score the lone goal of the 2021 Copa America Final against Brazil.
More so, Messi has also been decisive in club play with both Barcelona and PSG, which includes a combined five goals in the UEFA Champions League competition over the calendar year.
Another Ballon d’Or win for Messi sure would bolster his already notable career resume as a footballer.
