The 1970 Podcast: Poch Wins First PSG Trophy; Mbappé Looks Lost; Payet’s Quarantine 15

The Trophée des Champions was played a few months later than usual but it was the same outcome as always with Paris Saint-Germain lifting the trophy for the eighth consecutive season with a 2-1 win over rivals Olympique de Marseille.

On this episode of The 1970, I’m joined as always by my co-host, Marc Damon, and we discuss the win over OM that saw a first-half goal from Mauro Icardi and a late penalty from Neymar Jr., who made his first appearance since returning from injury.

In just the third match of the Mauricio Pochettino-era, PSG has already won a trophy and we discuss the positives we’ve seen in the squad since the former Tottenham Hotspur manager took over for Thomas Tuchel.

If there’s a negative to point out, it’s the fact Kylian Mbappé still seems to be struggling. Could the Frenchman be dealing with fitness issues, or, is he at the point in his career where he’s trying to figure out what type of player he wants to be?

Later in the show, we discuss PSG’s full-back situation and why the club needs to make a signing during the January transfer window, Marc fat-shames Dimitri Payet, we debate whether Icardi is a top 10 striker, and we conclude by answering questions from listeners, including what in the world is going on with Mediapro and Ligue 1.

As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.
