The UEFA Champions League knockout stage has reached the quarterfinal stage where only eight teams remain. Only two reigning league-winners from Europe’s top five leagues remain: Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. Liverpool (Premier League), Real Madrid (La Liga) and Juventus (Serie A) were all eliminated in the Round of 16 stage.
Many are predicting that both PSG and Bayern will advance to the Champions League final. Both teams are in top form and have two of the most prolific attacking units in the continent. Former Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthaus is among those backing a final between the two powerhouse sides. In an editorial for Germany’s Sky Sport, he laid out his predictions for the rest of the tournament and added his reasoning to why he is supporting PSG to reach its first-ever final.
“My semifinals were Bayern against City and PSG against Atletico Madrid,” Matthaus said. “And my final Bayern against Paris. I have sympathy for the capital city club from France because I am friends with the owner and in terms of quality, Paris is better for me than Madrid.”
Matthaus is backing his former club Bayern to win the tournament. He called the reigning Bundesliga champions the “favorite in the Champions League.”
Still, a PSG and Bayern final would bring upon multiple fascinating storylines, including a tactical duel between two German managers. For Matthaus, he would be all in to see both German managers face off in the final.
“Flick against Tuchel, two great German coaches in the Champions League final,” Matthaus said. “That would be a wonderful story.”
