Winning the Champions League With PSG Means More to Mbappé Than the Ballon d’Or

When discussing the future of Kylian Mbappé, the conversation inevitably turns to his desire to move to a “big” club so that he can win the Ballon d’Or.

In a recent interview with the Mirror Sport, the Paris Saint-Germain superstar made it clear that he prefers success for club and country over individual accolades.

“To keep on being successful with the national team–next season we have the European Championship and that will be our ambition to be victorious there.”

“It is a big ambition of mine to win the European Cup and to be a part of PSG winning their first European Cup would be very special.”

Mbappé has long been rumored to be Real Madrid’s number one transfer target and many believe he won’t win the Ballon d’Or until he leaves PSG and Ligue 1.

Over the past three seasons, Mbappé has finished seventh (2017), fourth (2018), and sixth (2019) in the Ballon d’Or standings. With Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo entering the final stage of their careers, Mbappé stands to replace them as the favorite to win the coveted award but that’s not what drives the 21-year-old.

“It would be nice to win–but it is not something that keeps me awake at night. I don’t think I have to win it next season or the season after–there is no time limit I have put on it.”

“Always I will put PSG and the national team as my priority. Then, if personal honors come from my performances then it is a bonus.”

Mbappé is a player who measures his words carefully and if you’re a PSG supporter, it certainly gives you hope that he will sign a contract extension with PSG to remain in the French capital past 2022.
