The Mainz Right-Back and PSG Transfer Target With ‘Enormous Potential’

Paris Saint-Germain is busy preparing for the departure of Thomas Meunier who is out of contract with the Ligue 1 champions on June 30.

In recent weeks, several right-backs around Europe have been linked with a move to the French capital but beIN Sports consultant and former right-back Patrick Guillou believes Les Parisiens should continue pursuing FSV Mainz defender Ridle Baku (via Le Parisien).

“[Achraf] Hakimi is superior to him, but Baku has enormous potential and a large volume of play. Now he has to settle down.”

Baku has an estimated price tag of €8 million, which is doable for PSG following the financial impact of the coronavirus.

While some PSG supporters may dream of players like Hakimi or Liverpool FC’s Trent Arnold-Alexander, the fact is PSG can’t afford those players especially if they pay upwards of €70 million to keep Mauro Icardi after his season-long loan from Inter Milan.

My only concern with Baku is if he’s that much of an improvement over Colin Dagba. Both are similar in age, 21, and 22, and both have tremendous upside. I would prefer PSG sign a veteran right-back with UEFA Champions League experience and allow Dagba to continue his development to eventually take over in the next couple of years.
