PSG Left Behind in Race to Sign Napoli Forward Dries Mertens

Paris Saint-Germain has several priorities that need to be addressed in the upcoming transfer window and with finances being an issue due to the coronavirus, the club would be wise to look for players on expiring contracts.

One player who could potentially arrive in the French capital on a free transfer is Napoli forward Dries Mertens. This season, the Belgium international has scored 12 goals and recorded six assists in 29 appearances.

However, PSG isn’t the only club interested in signing the 33-year-old Mertens. According to Corriere del Mezzogiorno (via Le10Sport), Chelsea FC wants to bring Mertens to Stamford Bridge and the player reportedly would welcome a move to London.

The report makes sense considering Chelsea tried to sign Mertens during last January’s transfer window and they could use a player with his experience in the squad full of talented young players.

With Inter Milan also wanting to join the race for Mertens, Leonardo, PSG’s sporting director, will have to decide if it’s worth his time to try and convince Mertens to make the move to Ligue 1 or move on to other transfer targets. In this case, I think it would be wise for him to move on from Mertens.
