Earlier this season, I wrote an article titled “Angel Di Maria is an Assist Machine” and now, he is officially the top assist man in Ligue 1 now that the season has been canceled due to the coronavirus.
With 14 assists in only 26 games, Di Maria dominated the category with AS Monaco’s Islam Slimani a distant second with 8. Neymar Jr. rounds out the top five with 6 assist on the season.

As impressive as this season’s performance was, it leaves you wondering what would have been possible if the season was completed. In 2015-16, Di Maria’s first season with PSG, the 32-year-old recorded 18 total assist, which was the most that year, and you have to believe he would have surpassed that by a decent margin.
Di Maria’s favorite target, according to Culture PSG, was Kylian Mbappé who scored six goals thanks to El Fideo‘s passing. Marquinhos, surprisingly, was tied with Edinson Cavani for the second-most goals scored from Di Maria’s assists with two. Tanguy Kouassi (1), Thilo Kehrer (1), Mauro Icardi (1), and Neymar (1) round out the rest of the players who benefited from Di Maria’s unselfishness.
There’s no doubt that Di Maria was one of (if not the most) important players for PSG this season. While Neymar and Mbappé spent time out of the squad due to injury, Di Maria was durable and carried PSG through tough stretches in the season. With one year left on his contract, the club must decide whether to reward him with an extension or allow him to leave when he’s 33-years-old.
