Report: Neymar Has Not Met With PSG About Contract Extension

On the eve of a massive match against Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, Le Parisien reports that Neymar Jr. and his representatives have not met with Paris Saint-Germain executives to negotiate a contract extension.

Neymar’s current deal runs until 2022 but after last summer’s transfer drama, it’s hard to imagine that he will stay in the French capital long-term unless he signs a contract extension and commits to the PSG project.

According to the French publication, “the Neymar clan has still not met Leonardo [PSG’s sporting director]” despite the fact the Brazilian has been in fantastic form this season and recently stated that he is happy in Paris.

Neymar may be open to staying past 2022 but his highly publicized transfer request is still fresh on the minds of PSG leadership. For a deal to get done, Neymar will need to stay healthy and lead the club on a deep run into the latter stages of the Champions League.

Kylian Mbappé, PSG’s other star who has flirted with leaving this summer, is also under contract until 2022 but unlike Neymar, the Frenchman and his entourage have been in contact with the club about a contract extension since the start of the season according to Le Parisien. Mbappé’s thirst for trophies is well known and an early exit from the Champions League will definitely complicate things.

There is so much pressure on PSG to succeed in the Champions League this season. Exiting the Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive season would likely mean both Mbappé and Neymar will look for a move in the summer and PSG will be facing a total rebuild heading into next season.
