With 62 percent of the votes on tripheesunfp.com, Neymar Jr. beat out Yunis Abdelhamid and Moussa Dembélé to claim the UNFP Ligue 1 Player of the Month award for January.
— UNFP (@UNFP) February 20, 2020
Somewhat surprisingly, this is the first player of the month award for Neymar this season and only his second since coming to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. Fellow Brazilian Thiago Silva is the only other PSG player to win the award this season.
In January, Neymar scored six goals and recorded three assists across all competitions as PSG went undefeated in Ligue 1 with only one draw against AS Monaco.
His rib injury on February 1 has put a halt to his stellar start to 2020 but he returned in time to start against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League where he scored PSG’s only goal in the 2-1 loss.
It’s too late for Neymar to make a run at the February player of the month but March will be pivotal. PSG hosts Dortmund on March 11 with a chance to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and they also travel to Olympique Lyonnais with an opportunity to advance to the finals of the Coupe de France. Oh, and a little game called Le Classique on March 22 at the Stade Vélodrome.
