Ander Herrera Points Out Dortmund’s Fatal Flaw

Not only is Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund one of the most highly anticipated in the Round of 16, but it’s also expected to be one of the highest-scoring as well.

For PSG, Kylian Mbappé, Neymar Jr., Mauro Icardi, and Angel Di Maria will likely lead the attack. For Dortmund, Erling Haaland will look to extend his impressive goal-scoring record and Jadon Sancho is one of the most exciting players in Europe.

While all eyes will be on the attacking players, it will be the defense of both squads that will likely determine who advances and who crashes out of the tournament earlier than expected.

After PSG’s 4-4 draw against Amiens SC last Saturday, Ander Herrera was asked about what it will take to defeat Dortmund on their home turf (via Culture PSG).

“We have to play as we played in the last 23 games, with a lot of quality, a lot of intensity. We are able to play in different systems, with a lot of players. We have a lot of confidence.”

Herrera, who actually played right-back against Amiens, was then asked about Dortmund being an offensive-minded team and the former Manchester United midfielder eluded to one area of Dortmund’s game that PSG could potentially exploit.

“It’s true, Dortmund are the same way, both at home and away. They’re a team that can score a lot of goals but also concedes a lot. We have a lot of fast players. And they play with a very high defensive line. So we can take advantage of this.”

Dortmund’s defensive has been much maligned this season and if they play a high line against PSG, the results could be absolutely devastating. You have to imagine Dortmund manager Lucien Favre will coach against this but it’s hard to gameplan for the playmaking ability of Neymar and speed of Mbappé.

PSG’s defense has been shaky lately but with the return of Marquinhos after a hamstring injury, the capital club is getting healthy at just the right time.
