PSG Host Saint-Étienne in Quarter-Finals of Coupe de la Ligue

Following their resounding 4-1 win over Le Mans in the Round of 16 of the Coupe de la Ligue, Paris Saint-Germain learned they will host AS Saint-Étienne in the quarter-finals on January 8, 2020.

Saint-Étienne last won the Coupe de la Ligue in 2013 while PSG has lifted the trophy eight times. Last season though, Les Parisiens fell to EA Guingamp in the quarter-finals and with the tournament in its final year of existence, they’ll be wanting to win it one last time.

PSG should be the favorites to advance, they did defeat Les Verts 4-0 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on December 15 but there is one aspect that could cause issues for PSG and that’s the upcoming fixture congestion.

PSG has five matches in January. There’s the Coupe de France match away at amateur side ESA Linas-Montlhéry on January 5 and then a Ligue 1 match at home against AS Monaco on January 12. Manager Thomas Tuchel will need to rotate his squad, set priorities, and motivate his squad after the holiday break.

Fatigue or a weakened lineup could cause PSG to crash out of the Coupe de la Ligue but I expect them to put in a professional performance and advance. As Tuchel recently said, he wants to win everything at PSG.
