Paris Saint-Germain created plenty of scoring chances but couldn’t convert, falling 1-0 to Liverpool on Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 matchup.

Before the Reds scored in the final minutes of the second half, there was a controversial moment midway through the first 45 minutes.

The key moment in the first half came when Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate challenged Bradley Barcola. VAR reviewed the play to check if it warranted a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. After the review, the referee decided to let play continue.

Once the first 90 minutes were over, Vitinha spoke to Canal+ and shared whether he thought the foul should’ve been called on Barcola.

“I am on the field and it’s hard for me to see,” Vitina told the French media outlet (h/t Culture PSG). “I am far, I don’t want to speak without seeing. We won’t hide behind that. I remain optimistic, of course. Given the match we played, it was more than deserved to win.

“I know that the only thing that matters is that the ball goes into the back of the net, but the truth is that when we play like this, we are more ready, closer. We had plenty of chances, just like at the start of the season when we couldn’t score. But I am sure it will happen, we will play a great match at Liverpool, show personality once again, and win.”

This loss is PSG’s first since last November when they fell to Bayern Munich. Luis Enrique and his team must pick themselves up and turn the tie around at Anfield.

  1. I think it should be a standard protocol for very bubious situations in soccer game. The same way a referee is revewing a situation by checking the VAR,there should be a comission
that can review the same VAR after match and decide if the referee did a correct thing or not, even if the final result cannot be changed. If the comission consider the referee decision to be obviously unfair they can have the referee name retained and barred from future assignments (1 or 2 or3) given the problem of lack of objectivity and proffessionalism diplayed.Nobody is allowed to alter the course and the result of a game under no circumstances,no matter who that person is.
