Paris Saint-Germain is in what many would call a rebuild this season. Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Jr. have all departed in recent seasons. In their place are young, talented players like Bradley Barcola, Vitinha, and Warren Zaïre-Emery. So, how are things working out?
Domestically, PSG sits atop the Ligue 1 table, but things aren’t looking great in the UEFA Champions League at the moment. Through five games in the league phase of the tournament, PSG is in the elimination zone, meaning they are in danger of dropping out of the Champions League with no UEFA Europa League to fall back on either. Three matches remain for PSG, two of which are against RB Salzburg and VfB Stuttgart, so bet 10 get 30 could be a good strategy if you think PSG’s quality will be enough to see them win those matches and advance to the knockout stage.
The area of the pitch where PSG is struggling the most is in the attack. Through the five matches in the Champions League, PSG has only scored two goals and a third courtesy of an own-goal. The struggles in front of goal could be expected given the departure of Kylian Mbappé last summer to Real Madrid. The Frenchman contributed 40+ goals per season in all competitions, and in addition to the offensive output, he was also a superstar who increased the popularity of the club.
It was recently reported that the PSG store in Paris has gone from revenue of €100K per day, to €10,000 per day. Combine that with the struggles of Ligue 1 to secure a lucrative broadcast deal, and you could make the argument that PSG needs a superstar player to help score goals, increase revenue at the club, and keep Ligue 1 afloat.
So, who could PSG sign that could do all that? Well, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland would be the ideal candidate. Recently, the prolific striker said, “PSG is a very big club so they will always be a big team. It will be difficult to play against them, but it will be a beautiful match to follow.” We know PSG has the financial means to sign Haaland and the player may be looking for a new project after winning the Premier League and Champions League with Manchester City.
The other superstar who could be on the move to the French capital is Vinicius Junior. Mbappé’s teammate at Real Madrid plays in the Frenchman’s preferred position on the left wing. He could also be the player who keeps Mbappé from ever winning a Ballon d’Or. If Mbappé is the preferred player at Real Madrid, I could see Vini Jr. leaving with PSG being a strong contender to sign him.
