Paris Sint-Germain closed their summer tour in Asia with a 3-0 friendly win over Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Neymar Jr. made headlines because of his return and brace, but Marco Asensio scored late in the contest.
Asensio, who arrived this summer from Real Madrid as a free agent, hopes this goal puts him on the right track as the 2023-24 season nears. After the victory, the 27-year-old spoke with PSG TV to discuss the end of the summer tour and look ahead to the new campaign.
“I am very happy to score my first goal and for the victory,” Asensio said (h/t Paris Fans). “I think it was important to finish the tour with a victory, so I’m very happy on a personal level and for the team as well, which is moving forward and growing stronger.
“Everything is going well, with the teammates, with the coach. It’s an incredible group, the atmosphere is superb, we are creating a team, and we are already showing it.”
The Spanish international will be part of the forward group that attempts to replace the production from Lionel Messi and likely Kylian Mbappé. It will be interesting to see where Asensio fits in new manager Luis Enrique’s system, whether he becomes a starter or is a super substitute.
Regardless of how much he plays, if the former Real Madrid player can contribute, that’s all that matters in the end for PSG.
