Javier Tebas Breaks Silence Over Barcelona Failing to Reunite with Messi

Lionel Messi decided on his future this week, announcing that he intends to sign with Inter Miami once his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires on June 30.

FC Barcelona had talked about reuniting with the Argentine but failed. One reason for their inability to bring the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner was La Liga needing to give them the green light on their financial package.

The Spanish league took their time to review every aspect and La Liga president Javier Tebas commented on the Catalan side’s failure to bring Messi back to Camp Nou this summer.

“People always look for reasons where there are none,” Tebas said about the frustrated return of Messi to Barcelona (h/t Mundo Deportivo). “We have always been very clear. Barça is not in the one-on-one norm, it is at 40%, and since the norm was changed for all the clubs, they are a little better than the last year, but it is by no means in the one-on-one norm.

“The viability plan is for all the clubs and it is as a consequence of the new Sports Law that was approved on December 22, which makes us even more responsible for the future of the clubs.”

Barcelona might be the biggest loser in the Messi free agency race as PSG gets the veteran goal scorer’s wages off their books. Meanwhile, Al-Hila still will look to use the money reserved for Messi; there’s even a report that they’re eyeing Neymar Jr.

The Spanish club wanted Messi to give a proper send-off to their club legend. Still, it now seems one of the final memories Barcelona supporters will have of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner as their player will be the tearful press conference in 2021.

  1. Their excuse for their failing to reunite with Messi is very thin. It’s shameful the manner they treated one of the greatest footballers, a living legend.
