FC Barcelona wants to reunite with Lionel Messi, but the Spanish club has to cut their wage bill by offloading players.
One name in the rumor mill that Barcelona could sell to help clear space for Messi is Ferran Torres. The 23-year-old’s name is linked to Aston Villa as the Spanish club’s football director Mateu Alemany will head to the Premier League side to begin the 2023-24 season.
However, Mundo Deportivo reported on Saturday that Torres has no intention of leaving the Catalan side, which put a thorn in Barcelona’s plans to reunite with Messi.
Torres is under contract until 2027, so the player has all the power to stay and fight for a position next season in the Barcelona team. If other players have the same mentality of wanting to remain past this summer transfer window, it makes a Messi reunion more difficult.
As a result, the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner might have to consider other options if the La Liga side cannot clear space on their wage bill to accommodate a Messi signing.
