FC Barcelona has been vocal about their pursuit of reuniting with Lionel Messi this summer. The Argentine’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires in June and many with the Spanish club believe that Messi will return.
Spanish Gerard Romero reported on Saturday (h/t Barca Universal) that the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner is eager to know his fate before the 2022-23 season ends. Romero notes that the veteran goal scorer isn’t planning to wait too long.
Barcelona needs to get its finances in order. Despite reportedly offering a contract that would see him take a pay cut, the Spanish club still needs to offload players to fit the Argentine into their wage structure.
Nonetheless, if Barcelona cannot develop a proposal that meets Messi’s demands and one that La Liga approves, then Romero says the 35-year-old will attempt to reach an extension with PSG; however, that might prove complicated.
Unless Messi also takes a pay cut at PSG too, it’s doubtful the Argentine remains in the French capital considering the other needs that the capital club can use his wages to fill out the squad.
While MLS appears a distant option, it could be a reality if Barcelona and PSG aren’t realistic landing spots this summer.
