Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier likely has his days numbered as the capital club boss after crashing out in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 in March.
Taking over PSG was Galtier’s most prominent task of his managerial career. But, while there was optimism around the French tactician’s appointment, journalist Didier Roustan wasn’t buying the hiring from the start.
“I never believed in Christophe Galtier at PSG,” Roustan said recently on La Chaîne L’Equipe (h/t Paris Fans). “I think he should have taken an extra step because managing these players is extremely complicated. I was thinking maybe the fact that Campos is on his side… but it looks like Campos is letting him go. So I don’t want to go after him either and there are still circumstances.”
Roustan also says that Galtier became overwhelmed as the PSG manager considering the star players in the lineup. The 56-year-old had never needed to lead a group of players like Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Jr., so it was a tall task to ask of Galtier.
“You could say that the planets weren’t aligned (…) So yes, Galtier has a big part of the responsibility, but I think that at some point he’s overwhelmed and he’s not helped,” Roustan continued. “This must also be taken into account. His communications? He loses her when he was quite good at communication and he is lucky that the press likes him quite well. But he lost his communication as he went along.”
There are plenty of rumors about who will take over should PSG sack Galtier after the 2022-23 season, but the team could look a lot different as sporting advisor Luis Campos attempts to build around Mbappé.
Messi could be on his way out with the Argentine’s contract expiring in June and Neymar is rumored to be on the market this summer, even if it’s a challenge to sell him.
