Andres Iniesta has lauded Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi for orchestrating a 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign that was “spectacular in every way.”
Messi bolstered his career resume on Sunday with a long-awaited World Cup tournament win, as he guided the Argentina national team to a dramatic penalty shootout win over France in the final. The PSG star scored twice in the final, including a goal in the second extra time period that provided the reigning Copa America champions with a brief 3-2 lead.
Iniesta closely watched Messi’s strong run of performances at the World Cup, and as he spoke about on Monday during his return to the Ciutat Esportiva, the veteran midfielder was simply left amazed by his former Barcelona teammate.
“Leo did everything possible to get it,” Iniesta said. “The World Cup that he had was spectacular in every way, and the icing on the cake with the World Cup was incredible.”
Messi also won the World Cup Golden Ball honor for the second time in his career after logging 10 goal contributions at this year’s tournament.
