Messi Is Couple of Games Away From Setting Historic World Cup Record

Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi could be on his way to making FIFA World Cup history if Argentina has a deep run in the knockout stages.

After the CONMEBOL side’s 2-0 win over Poland, the veteran forward sits at 22 World Cup appearances, putting him fourth on the list and three away from tying Germany international Lothar Matthäus.

When Argentina faces off against Australia on Saturday in the Round of 16, Messi will tie Paolo Maldini for third place. Should the Albiceleste advance, the PSG star could set his eyes on Miroslav Klose.

Should the South American nation reach the World Cup final, Messi can become the all-time leader in appearances with 26. This accomplishment would be the cherry on top for the Argentine, who wants to win the one trophy that has long eluded him in his career.

After suffering a humiliating loss to kick off the tournament versus Saudi Arabia, leading some to question if Argentina is a contender, they’re back to being one of the favorites to lift the trophy.
