Many will be rooting for Lionel Messi at the 2022 FIFA World Cup to win the trophy that has long eluded him, as this tournament marks the last in his career.
The 35-year-old was close to winning the competition in 2014 but fell in the final to Germany. However, now that this is the end of the road, many are rooting for the storybook ending to see Messi close his international career with a World Cup trophy.
Although they’re competing in the same tournament, Spain’s national team manager and former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique admitted in a live broadcast on Twitch he would like to see Messi and Argentina lift the trophy.
“If Spain didn’t win, I would like Argentina. Why? Because I think it would be unfair for a player like Messi to retire without winning a World Cup,” Enrique said.
“Si no ganara España, me gustaría que ganara Argentina. Un jugador de la talla de Messi, sería injusto que se retirara sin ganar un Mundial".

Enrique was Messi’s coach at Barcelona and they established a great relationship. The two were a part of the last UEFA Champions League the Catalan team won during the 2014-15 season, so his answer of seeing the veteran forward come out on top is no surprise.
