Spanish Journalist Dims Barcelona’s Hopes of Signing Messi in 2023

Lionel Messi is experiencing a resurgence this 2022-23 football season. The Argentine is producing at the level many expect despite being 35 years old and coming off a down year, where many believed his best days were behind him.

Nonetheless, Messi is again performing as he did at FC Barcelona as the veteran forward has 11 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for the French giants. As a result, PSG doesn’t want him to leave, and a Spanish journalist says the feeling is mutual.

Guillem Balagué stated (h/t TNT Sports Argentina) that Messi isn’t hesitating to extend his tenure in Paris as his contract expires in June 2023.

“If today PSG tells Messi, ‘Here’s the contract 1+1,’ he’ll sign it,” Balagué said. “But he wants to wait until after the World Cup.”

FC Barcelona has publicly stated their desire to have the PSG star return to the Camp Nou after exiting the Spanish club in 2021. Still, if Balagué’s remarks are accurate, it appears as though the feeling isn’t mutual.

If Messi extends his tenure at PSG, then it’s probable Messi’s European career could end in the French capital.
