Although Paris Saint-Germain has seen their front three off to a good start offensively, there is some criticism over whether Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar Jr. are willing to defend.
On Wednesday, CBS Sports pundit Guillem Balagué revealed that the trio’s inability to defend makes it hard for him to consider the French giants as an actual threat to win the UEFA Champions League.
During Saturday’s press conference with the media ahead of the matchup against Olympique Lyonnais, manager Christophe Galtier was asked about the three player’s capability to be positioned in the right spots defensively and not only look to attack the opposition.
“They all three have experience of a very high level,” Galtier told reporters (h/t Canal Supporters). “They have this ability to make decisions during a game. But obviously, that requires an investment.
“Ney is the one with the best profile to have this defensive withdrawal. This desire too. Kylian is an important point of attachment. Leo, he has a different form. He is always very well placed to receive the ball. Ney is the one that gives the best balance.”
PSG has goals to win the UEFA Champions League, and this summer, they targeted a crucial weakness in their squad, the midfield. The Ligue 1 side would find it hard to win the top prize in Europe with Marco Verratti and spare parts.
The capital club will need to ask its three star players to track back and defend if they want to beat some of the top clubs in Europe.
