Xavi Simons put an end to his Paris Saint-Germain run last week, as he decided to leave the club in favor of a free transfer move to PSV.
Over the past season, Simons had the golden opportunity to train and learn from PSG’s star-studded attacking trio in Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe. While he much cherished the time that he spent with them, Simons recognizes that he simply had to leave the club in order to earn more playing time minutes.
“I trained with them every day for two years, learned a lot from them, but in the end matches are important too,” Simons told ESPN NL.
“I just turned nineteen, so I think I have to take that step now to develop myself.”
Simons did not necessarily share the pitch much with Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe last season. For one, he appeared in six total Ligue 1 fixtures with the club.
Simons’ last match with the reigning Ligue 1 champions came in a May league fixture against Montpellier last season, where he featured in 22 minutes of action and shared the pitch with the Argentine forward and the French international.
