This past weekend, Kylian Mbappe surprised the football world when he opted to sign a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain. On Monday, the 23-year-old made the rounds with the media, explaining his decision to remain in his hometown.

Mbappe understands that those who are Real Madrid supporters and cover the Spanish club are livid with his choice to remain in France. The PSG star spoke with CBS Sports, where he was asked about the reaction in Spain regarding his decision to sign with Les Parisiens until 2025.

“No, I accept. I understand. I understand because first of all, I want to say thank you to everybody there. And they gave me a lot of love, a lot of affection. And I was really proud to have my name next to the Real Madrid Club and Real Madrid fans. But I understand the deception is normal,” Mbappe said.

“I don’t have any reaction with it just to understand. But they have to understand I chose to stay in my country because I’m French and I’m sure they will understand me. I wanted to write history of my country in the league of my country in the capital. So it’s for that aspect a little bit more.”
