After Paris Saint-Germain crashed out in the UEFA Champions League against Real Madrid, many journalists, pundits, and supporters called for the firing of president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
In an interview with L’Équipe (via Paris Fans), former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge disagrees that Al-Khelaifi should be ousted from his position following the latest elimination from the Champions League.
“You have to include the coach in strategic decisions while developing a game philosophy that matches the DNA of the club,” Rummenigge said.
“The president, the sports director, and the coach must be together in the project. Paris needs continuity at all levels and to achieve this, you need a technician who ensures balance. PSG has all the ingredients to become a club capable of marking its time.”
Nonetheless, the former club chief stated that there are some areas the capital club needs to improve if they want to win the Champions League. Rummenigge believes that the president, sporting director, and manager must be on the same page.
Furthermore, he adds that the French giants need to adopt a style that relates to the club’s identity.
“You have to include the coach in strategic decisions while developing a game philosophy that matches the DNA of the club. The president, the sports director, and the coach must be together in the project,” Rummenigge said.
“Paris needs continuity at all levels and to achieve this, you need a technician who ensures balance. PSG has all the ingredients to become a club capable of marking its time.”
Finally, Rummenigge stated that one word of advice he would give Al-Khelaifi is to be patient with the project. Winning the Champions League won’t happen overnight despite how much money goes into investing in a squad.
“If I have any advice for Nasser, it’s: ‘be patient.’ PSG have an exceptional workforce but they have no patience. PSG must understand that it is simply impossible to win C1 overnight, regardless of the investments made,” Rummenigge said.
