Report: Lionel Messi Shifts Focus to PSG After Argentina Qualified for World Cup

The FIFA break is over and although Paris Saint-Germain went into it worried about Lionel Messi playing with the Argentina national team due to his hamstring injury.

Nonetheless, the 34-year-old is returning to the French capital with no further damage to the hamstring. Most importantly for Messi, Argentina is now qualified for the World Cup next year.

With Argentina booking its spot for next year’s tournament, it plays into what Messi wants to do for the remaining qualifying matches for the international window in March.

Marca reports that Argentina is seriously considering not calling up Messi for the remaining qualifying games for next year. Furthermore, the Spanish media outlet adds that Messi understands it’s right to give PSG more time with the World Cup place now secure.

Through the 2021-22 season, Messi has played more minutes internationally than domestically thus far.

Les Parisiens and the Argentine Football Association have discussed Messi’s international status for the remaining fixtures as the next FIFA break comes in March. PSG states that it would benefit both parties if Messi were to miss the final four matches.
