Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team took care of business against Uruguay with a key 3-0 win in 2022 World Cup qualifying play.
Messi scored the opening goal of the contest and Argentina did not look back from there, as La Albiceleste scored two more goals to clinch one convincing win.
In speaking after the match (via TyC Sports), Messi detailed takeaways from the win, where he revealed on just how Argentina was able to create key goal-scoring chances over the contest.
“We played a great match, I think we are growing in terms of our play,” Messi said. “We got used to having the ball. Today was a tough match and we had to win it. Everything turned out perfect.
“Uruguay waits for you and creates danger. Once we got the first goal, we started to find space and the goals appeared. It was important to win because we knew the results of the other teams. We have one game left and if we get 7 points, we are very good.”
Argentina sits at second place in the 2022 CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying standings with 22 points through 10 matches. Brazil holds the top spot with 28 points in 10 matches.
For now, Messi will lead Argentina to one more World Cup qualifying fixture in the October international break, which will come on October 14 with the key home fixture against Peru.
