Paris Saint-Germain picked up arguably the most impressive victory of its season in the 2-0 UEFA Champions League home group stage win over Manchester City. Argentine forward Lionel Messi led the way in the match with a key second half goal.
PSG defender Marquinhos was thoroughly impressed with the effort from his team in the match, including when it came to defending against Manchester City’s notable on-ball talents.
In speaking to PSG TV, Marquinhos reflected on the key win for the Ligue 1 giants, where he lauded Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi for their defensive contributions in the fixture.
“We had certain difficult moments during the encounter,” Marquinhos said. “We struggled to get out of them. After that, we needed to defend, give our all, and we saw all of the team able to play together and remain solid defensively.
“We aren’t just talking about the goalkeeper and the defenders, but the whole team throughout the match. It made things easier. During the match, we saw Neymar defend, Kylian (Mbappe) who blocked an effort in the box too … Leo (Messi) also put in huge effort. It’s these small details that make a team win. It made the difference.”
While Manchester City had its way in possession and when creating key goal-scoring chances, the side still could not come away with a mere one goal in the contest.
PSG and Manchester City will meet again later this year in the return Champions League group stage match.
