Pochettino Reveals Why Messi Was Subbed Off During PSG’s Ligue 1 Fixture vs. Lyon

Paris Saint-Germain came away with a dramatic 2-1 Ligue 1 win over Olympique Lyonnais on matchday six. However, one decision made by PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino in the match has been garnering much attention.

To the surprise of many, Pochettino elected to sub off Messi during the second half of the contest.

Messi did not pick up a goal contribution during his time on the pitch, but he did create multiple goal-scoring chances over the course of the match. Still, Pochettino felt that it was time for Messi to come off the pitch.

After the result, Pochettino provided his reasoning to Prime Video Sport France (via RMC Sport) on why Messi did not complete the match, where he also noted what the Argentine told him after the fixture.

“I think everyone knows that we have a lot of very good players, with a squad of 35 people,” Pochettino said. “We have to make choices, in the group and then in the game, thinking about the best for the team and for each player. Sometimes the decisions are positive or not, but that’s why we’re a coach and standing next to the bench, to make decisions. It may or may not please.

“I asked him how he was doing, he told me he was doing fine, no problems.”

PSG is now set for a key Ligue 1 fixture against Metz up next. This fixture could be a golden opportunity for the Argentine forward to pick up his long-awaited first goal contribution with the French powerhouse.
