New Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum made his official debut with the team during the 2021 Trophee des Champions Final against Lille OSC. Wijnaldum was a second-half substitute in the match as he went on to feature in the team’s midfield setup.
Many were questioning on why Wijnaldum did not start in this match, and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino has his reasoning for why this did not transpire. The Argentine spoke after the match (via Bein Sports France) on this matter.
“Wijnaldum could only play 20-25 minutes, no more,” Pochettino said. “And I think the performance until there was good. We needed an offensive player.
“When you are a coach, you need to observe. You need to make decisions, but you have to pay attention because players who don’t have a lot of training sessions can sometime struggle.”
Wijnaldum now looks ahead to possibly making his first appearance in Ligue 1 over in the team’s upcoming fixture against Troyes AC.
