Paris Saint-Germain came up just short in the 2021 Trophee des Champions Final as Lille OSC finished with a narrow 1-0 win.
Mauro Icardi was among the few regular first-team starters who featured in this final. Overall, the veteran Argentine forward did not have his best showing against Lille.
For one, Icardi notched a mere six passes completed and one shot recorded over the course of the match. He simply could not get going and found a difficult time exerting a presence while in the opponent’s penalty box.
Icardi simply failed to mirror his standout showing from the 2020 Trophee des Champions Final, where he scored a key goal against rival Olympique de Marseille.
PSG now looks ahead to its upcoming 2021-2022 Ligue 1 opener, which will come against newly promoted side Troyes AC. The French powerhouse sure would like to see Icardi score a key goal in this match in order for him to kick off league play on a promising note.
