Paris Saint-Germain is now set for the upcoming 2021 Trophee des Champions Final against reigning Ligue 1 winners Lille OSC.
One could presume that PSG may look for revenge in this matchup. Lille dethroned PSG at the top of the Ligue 1 standings last season as it won the league title after one arduous campaign.
However, PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino is not viewing the upcoming French super cup final against Lille from this perspective. Instead, he is simply aiming for his team to come away with a massive final win.
In speaking during a press conference ahead of the final, Pochettino touched on the expectations for PSG’s first competitive match of the campaign.
“This game won’t be about getting revenge against Lille but against ourselves,” Pochettino said. “The loss of the league title and our Champions League exit left a bitter taste. We will do everything to change that, we want to win every competition.
“All the players may not be available, but that won’t be an excuse. We are Paris Saint-Germain, we want to win. We’ll do everything to win this trophy, but it’s not about revenge because Lille deserved their title.”
PSG may see the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Georginio Wijnaldum feature in this match. The two did not take part in a single preseason fixture, but they have been regulars in the team’s scheduled training sessions as of late.
Nonetheless, PSG sure is ready to clash with its new Ligue 1 rival.
