‘The Coach Will Make the Choice’ — Verratti Discusses Italy’s Major Midfield Dilemma Ahead of the Euro 2020 Knockout Stage

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti says he will respect Italy manager Roberto Mancini’s upcoming decision on whether he will start in the Euro 2020 knockout stage.

Verratti returned to action with the Italian national team during its Euro group stage fixture against Wales, where he notched the game-winning assist in the match.

Mancini now faces a notable dilemma on whether to start Verratti in the upcoming Euro knockout stage.

If Mancini decides to start Verratti for Italy’s upcoming knockout stage run, this would mean that one of Manuel Locatelli, Jorginho or Nicolo Barella will have to make way for the Paris Saint-Germain talent in the team’s midfield setup.

Verratti will be content regardless of what Mancini elects to go with on this matter.

The PSG star spoke further to Sky Sport (via TuttoMercatoWeb) after Italy’s win against Wales about this dilemma.

“The coach must be happy and proud to have such players,” Verratti said. “In the national team, I would even be on the bench. We must all be proud to represent a country in such an important competition, millions of people.

“The coach will make the choice and everyone will give their best. If I play one minute or one hundred, however, I will give it all. We have to give our best.”

The Italian national team clinched Group A, which means that the side will take on the runner-up of Group C.

As it stands, Italy may be in for a massive Euro 2020 Round of 16 showdown against Ukraine.
