Italy National Team Manager Roberto Mancini Remains Hopeful to Have Marco Verratti for European Championship

Marco Verratti is dealing with a right-knee injury that has ended his 2020-21 season. However, with the UEFA European championships taking place next month, Italy national team manager Roberto Mancini remains hopeful that he will have the 28-year-old.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Canal Plus), Verratti will rest for a week before returning to training, indicating that the Italy international will miss the two friendly matches against San Marino and the Czech Republic in preparation for the European Championship.

If the PSG midfielder is not fit to play against Turkey on June 11, Italy’s first match at the Euro, Stefano Sensi, and Manuel Locatelli are the possibilities to replace him. Nonetheless, one thing is sure, Verratti will be present in the list of 26 Italians for the European Championship.

Paris Saint-Germain announced that Verratti would be out four to six weeks, meaning his recovery date sits around the start of the European Championship. As a result, the capital club would be hesitant to see Verratti represent Italy, having come off his recent knee injury.

Nonetheless, it will be understandable why the PSG midfielder wants to represent his country, considering Italy has been away from the international stage after missing the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
