Report: PSG’s Search for a Left-Back Takes Them to Argentina as They’re Showing Interest in Vélez Defender

As the January transfer window is due to open in a few days, clubs will be looking to strengthen their squads for the second half push of their respective seasons. Whether it’s competing in Europe or their respective domestic leagues, players will be moving next month.

With the coronavirus pandemic affecting clubs’ ability to spend a significant sum of money, plenty will be looking for reasonable purchases, which will cause some to look for hidden gems.

In his first stint as Paris Saint-Germain sporting director, Leonardo went after Marco Verratti. At the time, the young midfielder was playing for Delfino Pescara in Serie B, where he helped the club earn promotion into Serie A.

As the budget will be tight, Leonardo could turn to South America for cheaper options to address needs on the squad this January. AM 810 journalist Lorena Gago tweeted that Les Parisiens are reportedly showing interest in Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield left-back Francisco Ortega.

With the uncertain status of Juan Bernat, whose contract will expire at the end of the season, PSG needs to begin thinking about the left-back position. Mitchel Bakker is currently eating up most of the minutes, which is why they might take a look at the 21-year-old Argentina international.

Still, more depth is needed at that, especially with Bernat rehabbing is anterior cruciate ligament injury and Layvin Kurzawa also being unreliable.
